Light the purpose, not the whole garden

Understand what solar lights need

A separate solar panel placed in full sun usually performs better than a tiny panel built into the lamp. Check claimed run time cautiously: winter days, shade and cloudy weather reduce output. Replaceable rechargeable batteries and accessible panels make a fitting much more useful over time. For year-round dependability near entrances or steps, consider low-voltage mains lighting fitted appropriately.

Create rhythm with decoration

Repeat one material or colour—weathered metal, terracotta, timber or stone—to unite pots, lanterns and ornaments. Vary height rather than scattering objects evenly. One confident focal point is usually stronger than many small pieces. Mirrors need careful placement so they do not confuse birds, while reflective objects should never direct strong sun towards dry planting or neighbouring windows.

Keep the night garden wildlife-friendly

Use the lowest brightness that works, point light downwards and switch it off when the garden is not in use. Avoid illuminating hedges, ponds, nest boxes and known bat routes. Clean solar panels regularly, reposition them as seasonal shade changes and bring delicate decorative pieces into shelter before severe winter weather.
